The ultimate screen capture tool.

CNET Editors' review

Calling TechSmith's SnagIt a screen capture tool is a bit like calling a Swiss Army Knife a knife. Yes, it's first and foremost a screen capture tool, and a very good one at that. But SnagIt offers a lot more than free gadgets that also capture screen images. In fact, it's much more of a graphics toolkit optimized for capturing and using onscreen images and information than a screen grabber. SnagIt is advanced enough to enhance productivity for business users and other professionals, but it's also easy for home users to start right up with. If you regularly copy images, Web pages, and screen views to save, embed, share, and use in other ways, SnagIt is well worth trying. It's free to use for 30 days.
The first thing we realized when we downloaded and opened SnagIt is that it offers a lot of options, even during setup. SnagIt includes specific add-ons and output tools for each Office application; choosing the custom installation option let us keep from installing features we don't use.
A Disk Cost counter tracked the space SnagIt used, too. The next thing we noticed is that SnagIt comes with lots of help, especially when you click "I'm New to SnagIt" when the setup wizard finishes. A video tutorial, online manual, and simple yet intuitive interface make SnagIt easy to pick up. SnagIt not only offers multiple ways to capture screen images, Web pages, and other data and elements but also to use your captures, such as the built-in SnagIt Editor, OneClick operations, SnagIt Printer, and various output profiles. There's even a freehand option that lets you draw your selection. A system tray menu let us quickly access SnagIt's features and settings.
There's an old cartoon in which a wee lad has just downed five or six ice cream sodas. He says to the man behind the counter, "And now I want to thank you very, very much." The look on the guy's face sums up how software makers feel about the sweat of their brow. SnagIt offers a lot more than just a vastly superior screen capture tool. It's worth the price.

Snagit is a tool that you can use to easily take a snapshot of your screen, edit it, and then send it to an application or website.

It is designed for users with any experience level, as you can clearly see when initiating the software. Two video clips are available in the Snagit Message Center, for both novices (to learn how to get acquainted with Snagit) and power uses (to find out what's new in this version).

The Snagit interface (which is user-friendly and attractive) is mainly divided into five parts - the menu bar, quick launch, related tasks, profiles, and profile settings.

Here, you can choose one of the basic capture shortucts called Profiles - all-in-one, full screen, copy to clipboard (with or without preview), web page as PDF with links, free hand, or menu with time delay.

Below that section you can change the profile settings for a capture - mode and input, output, and effects. Once you have configured this, press the Print Screen key or click the red button. A selection tool that criss-crosses the screen appears, so you can easily choose the part of the screen you want to capture, by using the click-and-drag method.

In the Snagit Editor you can apply touchups to your captures, organize and share them with your friends. You can completely customize Snagit Editor, batch convert images, assign flags (e.g. important, idea, personal), use the library to organize captures, use canvas, add callouts, arrows and stamps, and more.

You can easily get lost in this software. Its user guide and video tutorials are wonderfully built. However, Snagit has its downsides in the trial edition (e.g. you can only capture video up to 2GB). Also, the Editor takes a while to apply effects.

All in all, Snagit definitely deserves to be taken into consideration, whether you already know how to use this type of program or not. It consumes a small amount of system memory, and the price for the full version is cheap

VueScan is a powerful scanning application that allows you to acquire high-quality images using a flatbed or film scanner. If you are not satisfied with the software delivered by the scanner vendor or if you want to improve it with new functions you should try this program.

The application provides the basic functions of a scanner software allowing you to change the scanning parameters such as the transparency, the resolution and the output file. You can customize the scanning options and save them to a file that can be quickly loaded for certain media types.

Before scanning the image you can preview the original and crop the part that interests you the most. You can use one of the presets available in the program (the most commonly used photo images such as 3x5 inches or 6x9 centimeters). For bigger images you can choose multiple crop that allows you to split the image into more parts.

The user can use the application to adjust the colors of the image before scanning. The program offers the option to change the color balance of the image depending on the light source or the environment of the photo. You can choose from one of the presets (fluorescent, incandescent or natural light) or manually change the brightness of every individual color (RGB).

The output image can be saved as TIFF, JPG or PDF and the properties of the file can be customized at will. For instance for a PDF file you can select the name, the compression, the paper size and you can create a multiple page document for the batch scanning jobs.

The interface comes with two display modes: simple for the average user and advanced for those who want to view all the options available in the program. This makes VueScan an easy to use program for every computer user.
